"Invalid" folders suddenly appearing in Lightroom CC

my lightroom photo library split between macbook pro drive , external hard drive. yesterday, number of folders in lightroom folder tree (folders stored on external drive) started appearing greyed out, "inval.." item count should be. searching online, believe means "invalid path representation".

if highlight 1 of these folders says contains 0 photos. can't relink folder, still on drive , contains original images. can't move or delete these folders. restored catalog previous day's time machine (which more recent last lr catalog backup, since i'd done lot of editing didn't want lose), same issue appearing there. i'm attaching screenshot show folders' appearance.

in addition recent folders, entire library 2011 greyed out , appearing invalid.

i can access photos via collection folders, if right click , try "go folder in library" nothing @ happens.

i've searched internet solutions , have found couple of reports no resolution or explanation. please can advise on can fix it? i'm worried it's going spread other folders. need find fix...

many thanks

emma
