Refine tool missing - Select and Mask doesn't work on hair

i can't find out how use tool. need select edges of hair, , used brush once inside refine edge dialog box. allowed me use brush tool around edges of hair, , select loose strands. now, select , mask feature selects large chunk of color touched brush, , not select strands. i'm left person's head , 3-inch blobs of red background on either side of head, because acts magic wand or quick selection tool instead.

 

how make a  selection lasso tool, refine edge , select hair? keep hearing use pen tool, turns selection anyway. doesn't make sense make pen tool selection each , every time want select hair - make selection of person's entire body, , use part of refine edge. totally lost on how select strands of hair , refine edge.

once make selection, click 'select , mask' button in options bar. (the name used 'refine edge').

that open properties panel. see set of tools.

select second tool, refine edge brush. can brush on edges of hair way used doing.

Why is os_ViewContainer running?

when open illustrator (cc) opens window os_viewcontainer cannot view or close. shows in taskbar second window illustrator when mousing on ai icon. have tried select no luck. have tried clear using red x, no luck. close when close illustrator. wondering why there , if should concerned. oh, running windows 10. hi ccsachs,   as per query when launch illustrator opens " os_viewcontainer "   i request please share screenshots along below-mentioned details:   exact version of illustrator  graphic card using , when updated last time how performs in safe mode? Animate - problem with duplicating scripts after loop
