Separate controls for kerning and per character tracking... why?

first of all, please note understand traditional difference between kerning , tracking. specifically, tracking adjusting spacing between glyphs in piece of text, , kerning adjusts spacing between pair of glyphs. i'm not asking re-iteration of that, can post 1 if want.

what asking answer question @ end of message (see below), first, if possible, please try in ps:

1. add type layer 3 glyphs - e.g abc

2. use h type tool put insertion point between a , b

3. go character panel , increase kerning value --> space between a , b increased

4. undo

5. drag-select b h type tool b highlighted editing

6. go character panel , increase tracking value --> space between b , c increased

note: have cc 2015.5 right version should do

the end result essentially the same. only difference kerning increases space before insertion point , per-character tracking increases space after highlighted glyph. you're setting spacing between 2 glyphs either way. there essential reason 2 separate controls or legacy thing older ps versions , other apps when many users coming in traditional print backgrounds?

interesting point. think legacy traditional typesetting. find convenient have booth because need adjust each independently.

you can add space before first character line of type using kerning, not tracking.

for considers paragraph , character styles important, tracking can incorporated paragraph style, kerning can incorporated character style.

kerning used character pairs, ligatures, can part of paragraph style.
