Seeking Workstation Advice (6950x or 6900K)
i'm looking upgrade workstation gain access thunderbolt 3 connectivity , increase overall performance when working 2.5/4k+ footage. core applications premiere pro, after effects , davinci resolve.
the main question determining whether put resources towards 10 core 6950x or upgrading gtx 1080. i'd system have legs in regards usage , leaning towards 6950x, easier upgrade graphics card rather cpu. 80% of work editing , 20% color grading.
current workstation:
3970x
rampage extreme iv
quadro 4000
gtx 680 classified
lsi 9280 raid card
64gb ram
option 1:
6900k
rampage v edition 10 (would x99-e ws doesn't seem atx form factor work)
quadro m4000 (need 10-bit color)
gtx 1080 sc or gtx 1070 sc (what's performance/value differential here?, premiere pro 2015.3 pascal gpu performance - puget custom computers seems suggest negligible)
lsi 9280 raid
64gb ram 2133
thunderboltex 3
option 2:
6950x
rampage v edition 10 (would x99-e ws doesn't seem atx form factor work)
quadro m4000 (need 10-bit color)
gtx 680 classified
lsi 9280 raid
64gb ram 2133
thunderboltex 3
thanks!
if plan on keeping system long time, think investment in 10 core i7 can make sense. intel makes small performance jumps @ similar price points, while nvidia has been making bigger jumps in performance each gen. @ least ddr4-2400 memory, supported broadwell-e natively, recommend closer ddr4-3000.
i'm not sure if possible, if quadro , gtx can work dual gpu, might able run gtx 680 , quadro m4000 dual gpu. (you test on current system if needed, , gpu-z monitor performance of both cards.) quadro m4000 faster, long gtx 680 has 4gb shouldn't hold performance in premiere much. temporary solution until upgrade gtx card later , use quadro display/gui. if need newer quadro 4k monitor, there newer k , m series quadro cards around $160-$440 handle 4k monitors, , put money buying gtx 1080 or 1070.
the puget article shows minor difference between gtx 1070 , 1080, test project. explain kind of timeline , effects used test project in article. more gpu effects used, , more layers of raw media need debayering, bigger performance difference between 2 gtx cards. when picking gpu, need take consideration performance want in davinci resolve.
the rampage v manual says can split 40 lanes x16/x8/x8/x8. use cpu lanes run 4 pcie cards gtx @ x16. if use thunderbolt 2 card, may run in pcie gen 2.0 slot using pch lanes. appears disable of usb ports use slot @ x4, free 1 of x8 slots. if needed thunderbolt 3 , worried future expansion, asus ws motherboard plx chips allow more expansion. there new version of asus ws motherboard announced, has dual 10g lan ports.
