how to make object go behind another object

whats standard way make 1 object in front of object behind another

 

for instance, lets have mask of basketball , want basketball visible basketball in front of rest of background, someoene runs in front of basketball, how make basketball in front of else covered/behind person running in front of blocks vision

 

do create mask of person running in front of ball , have layering priority on person on ball or there better , more common way of doing this

you don't need mask stack layers in proper order have in front of others.
